In the lifecycle of a construction project in Japan, there is a quiet moment that signals the transition from building site to finished home. The carpenters have completed their work, electricians and plumbers have finished their installations, and the builder has checked the final details. The structure stands complete, but it is not yet truly ready to be presented. That final transformation belongs to a group of specialists known in Japan as Araiya-san.

What “Araiya” Means

The word arai simply means “to wash.” In construction, however, Araiya refers to professional cleaning specialists who prepare a building after construction or renovation. They are the final trade to step onto the site before a building is photographed, handed over, rented, sold, or occupied. In many countries, post-construction cleaning is treated as general labor. In Japan, it is considered a specialist discipline.

Removing the Traces of Construction

Even the most carefully managed construction project leaves behind dust and residue. Fine plaster particles, adhesive marks, fingerprints on glass, and debris in window tracks accumulate during the building process. When protective coverings are removed and surfaces are exposed, the Araiya-san begin their work, carefully removing the traces of construction.

Cleaning Architect-Designed Homes

Modern architect-designed homes in Japan increasingly rely on large areas of glazing to capture light and landscape. These dramatic surfaces reveal every imperfection, dust or streaks become immediately visible. As a result, glass requires careful washing and polishing before the building can be presented.
